Q: transfer of music between devices

Can anyone advise how I can transfer music tracks from my very old iPod shuffle to my iPad mini? Thanks in advance.

There is no way to transfer song files directly between an iPod shuffle and iPad.  It goes through the iTunes library on a Mac or Windows PC running iTunes.

 

The first step is to offload song files from the shuffle.  Syncing with iTunes is typically in one direction only, from iTunes library to iPod.  You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store (and you can also re-download them from the iTunes Store at no cost).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search using something like "ipod music transfer," you should get some useful links.

 

After the shuffle's songs files are on your computer's drive, add them to the iTunes library. You can then sync the songs to the iPad, using your preferred method.

    Hello, thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I am still stuck however.  I have loads of music on my iPod and laptop, they sync fine. My problem is trying to gett that music then copied onto the iPad mini. There are no leads that I can use to connect the mini to the laptop, and I have not been able to find any software that would allow me to do it wirelessly.  Can you recommend any?  Thanks again.

    What do you mean no leads?

     

    The iPad should have come with a USB to lightning cable like this one:

    You use that to connect the iPad to the computer to sync

     

    If the cable is plugged into the charger, just unplug it from the charger.

    The iPad comes with a USB docking cable.  If the iPad is recent, the cable should have the small Lightning connector that attaches to the bottom of the iPad.  If you don't have one for some reason, it looks like this

    If the iPad is older, it may use the older wider 30-pin connector, so the cable is like this

    The software for syncing your iPad directly to your computer is iTunes, which you are already using with your iPod. Once you have the proper cable, please post back with any specific questions.

    Oh lord, I am a complete eejit - that's what I use to charge the iPad mini with! It's connected to the adaptor plug which is hidden behind a cupboard, so it never occurred to me that it could be just what I needed.   Brilliant guys, thank you. I will see if physically attaching the ipad mini to the laptop does the trick. Am now going away to hide my embarrassment.
