Additionally, please note that you cannot sell/give your computer with an OS that you downloaded from the app store (unless it was the original OS the mac came with) as that is tied to your Apple ID forever and is not transferable. You must reinstall the original OS (which was most likely Mountain lion 10.8.x).

    Hi warjon642,

To completely reset your iMac, first back up any important files and photos because if you do what I say here, all your data will be gone. I am NOT RESPONSIBLE for any data you loose! First turn off your iMac. Then turn it back on while holding the command and R keys. You may release the keys when you see the Apple logo on the screen. Now wait for your Mac to boot up. You should then see the OS X Utilities screen. Select Disk Utility, and click your hard drive on the bar on the left. Then go to the erase tab on top of the window. Select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" for the format and name the hard drive "Macintosh HD". Then click erase and erase the hard drive. Erasing the hard drive may be different if you have OS X El Capitan, but you should be able to figure it out. after your hard drive is erased, quit Disk Utility. Then select Install OS X from the utilities window. Follow the steps to install OS X. This may take a while, so find something else to do for an hour or two. When it's done, it should reboot into your new copy of Mac OS X and display the welcome screen. Shut down your computer when you see the screen by holding the power button until it turns off. Now your Mac will boot into a new copy of Mac OS X and display the welcome screen when your friend turns it on. EXTRA: If you want to reset the volume to the default level for a true "out-of-box" condition, turn on your iMac while holding command, option, P, and R. Wait until you hear the startup chime a second time, then force shut it down like before. This is how to reset your Mac.

    Hope this helps,

    HFTaylor12.
