Install Yosemite on an external drive while running El Capitan?

Is there a way I can install Yosemite on an external drive from a Mac running El Capitan so that I can have the option of running Yosemite? When I try to run the installer, I never get a chance to specify the target drive. I immediate get a message saying

This copy of " the "Install Mac OS X" application is too old to be opened on this version of OS X.

Is there any way I can go backwards?

Use Diskmaker X to create a bootable Yosemite installer on an external disk or USB thumb drive

<http://liondiskmaker.com>

Or you can this from the command line:

For Yosemite you can create a bootable installer from a Terminal Session

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction

Then boot the external installer disk and install Yosemite
