Q: I need a usable photo view program or app to open my photos view them, open them up in my editing software. Does Apple make such a program? Photo's doesn't work for me.

I have a 27" iMac, I do photography and videos. The Photos app does not work for me. I would like to have a program that will open my photography's let me scroll through the folder of photo's and when I find one that I need to edit in my photoshop cs6 software I can open from the folder,  then save back in my pictures folder.  I am now looking at the Mac Book Pro. 15" the $2499 but I need a usable photo view software. I don't want the editor, import, project, shared, etc.,  I only want the viewer.  I have purchase different apps that does not work. The last one was the closes one I could find that I want but it quite working after about 4 days. The name of it is ( Image Viewer ) . I really want to get another Mac product because I really like everything except the viewer or no photo viewer. Please help,  this is very important to me!

If you simply want to look at them as you download them from your camera, you could just use the default built in app Preview. It will open them - that is what I use before deciding which one needs some "creative editing" or whatever and then file them in my own Photos folder (in my Documents folder) which I created when I decided I did not care for iPhoto or Photos.

Have you tried using Image Capture?

    Transfer images

Many cameras, and devices such as your iPhone that contain a camera, can use Image Capture for transferring images, video clips, and MP3 sounds to your computer. Once you transfer the items, you can delete them from the device.

    Open Image Capture for me

Connect your device to your computer, then turn the device on.

If the device is locked with a passcode, enter it.

In Image Capture, select the device in the Devices or Shared list.

Use the buttons at the bottom of the Image Capture window to view the thumbnails as a list (List view button) or to see larger thumbnails (Thumbnail view button), or to rotate (Rotate button) or delete (Delete button) images.

Drag the slider in the lower-right corner of the window to change the thumbnail size.

Click the Import To pop-up menu, then choose where to save the images or which app to use to open the image.

To import only some of the photos, select those photos, then click Import. To import all the photos, click Import All.

To automatically transfer images from your device to your computer whenever you connect it to your computer, click the Show Hide button  in the lower-left corner of the window. Click the “Connecting this device opens” pop-up menu, then choose AutoImporter.

To remove items from the device after transferring them to your computer, select Delete after Import in the lower-left corner of the window.

    Cheers,

If you want a front end for Photoshop then the obvious app is Adobe's Bridge

You should take a look at "External Editors For Photos" available at the App Store. It allows you to open any Image editor you have on your Mac directly from Photos. works well and does what you want.

I can't really argue the point since I don't have CS6 to test. It does work with Photoshop Elements 14 and the other 9 graphics programs I have installed. I guess I'm glad I don't use Photoshop CS6.

Perhaps I misunderstood the OP. You can scroll through all the photos in The Photo Library then launch a image editor from there. But you can't peruse a random folder of photos from Photos. Nope.

I have the preview app: the forward and back arrow are grayed out. They have always been grayed out so If I open a photo in the preview app, then I need to close the program then open it again with another picture.  I have a Canon 5 D Mark III camera, not a cell phone camera. I purchased the External Editors For Photos and still no luck. I do have photoshop bridge but I have to open the program before I can see the photos.  Still looking for an app to use. I have been doing digital photography for 10 years so I am not a newbe, I know how to get around . Love PS6 so I can't blame that . It maybe something wrong with the preview program that is installed on my mac. Thanks for trying to help.

    Diana,

FWIW, you need to open a folder of photos in Preview for the forward and backward arrows to work. If you only open one picture there is nothing to go forward and backward to or from.

I must be missing some subtle difference in what you want to do. If you connect your camera to your iMac Photos should open and import the pictures into the Photo Library. Once they are imported you can browse them and edit them in whatever image editor you want then save the edit back to the Photo Library or save it to a different folder if you want.

I did install  trial of Photoshop CC just to make sure I could launch it from Photos and it worked fine. As does Photoshop Elements and the others I have installed. I can't see why Photoshop CS6 would be any different.

Does Photos or preview work with RAW images ? If so how do I launch from these programs into PS CS6 ? I am sure it is me not understanding the programs and how they work. That is why I am here asking . I contacted tech support and he showed me how to open the preview app, open the picture folder, open the folder that I want to view, drag the photos into Preview app and use the down button to scroll. I was so excited I forgot to ask how to launch into PS. Thank's for you help.

No, you do not need to open/close Preview for every photo - here is my workflow:

When my Canon Icon appears on the desktop, I double click to open it. I have Finder Preferences set to view in Column View. I open the right sub folder of what I want to look at and it will show a bunch of .jpg's. Highlight the first one, then hold the Shift key while you highlight the last one in the row - that will select all of them. Then double click on the lot anywhere and Preview will open with ALL the pictures (thumbnails can be shown on the left). That way you can look at the entire "roll".

She does not want to use Photos; as I don't either, I suggested my workflow with Preview. (I absolutely do not care for iPhoto's or Photos' filing system - I prefer mine).
