Imac G4 to G5 network connection

Would appreciate your help!

I have an iMac G5 with the builtin Airport and have an old iMac G4 without any airport. I want to share the internet connection that the G5 is already getting from ethernet modem. What do I need to get to make the G4 receive the signal?

A friend on mine said get a wireless router, it's the same thing as an airport base. But got me a Lynksis an it's not working.

Thanks for your help!!

If you get a wired router you can connect it to your Ethernet modem. Then connect both your iMac G5 and iMac G4 to the router via Ethernet.

If you get a wireless router you can connect it to your Ethernet modem. Then you can connect your G4 directly to the router via Ethernet and your iMac G5 can connect via wireless.

You can add the appropriate AirPort card to your iMac G4. Then it will be able to join any 802.11b/g wireless network.
  • If the iMac G4 has a clock speed of 1 GHz or faster, it requires the AirPort Extreme card. It is NOT compatible with the original AirPort card.
  • If the iMac G4 has a clock speed of 700 or 800 MHz, it requires the original AirPort card. It is NOT compatible with the AirPort Extreme card.

So I assume you have the iMac G4 connected by an Ethernet cable to the Linksys Router (?)

Can you navigate to the web page 192.168.1.1 from the iMac G4? If so can you then log in to and administer the router like you do on the iMac G5.

Some things to check on:

  • MAC Address blocking isn't in use on the Linksys.
  • That in  Apple Menu > System Preferences... > Network > that you have a Green or Amber coloured blob next to "Built-in Ethernet".
  • That if you choose "Configure" for the "Built-in Ethernet" that you have the router's IP Address entered, an IP address for this iMac G4 which is in the range 192.168.1.x; where x is an integer between 0 and 255, but excluding 1 (which is the router) and n (which is the iMac G5's IP).

kind regards

BTW G5 and Intel are mutually exclusive terms when it comes to an iMac it is either G5 or Intel - you should update your profile as it affects the quality of advice that can be given.

Thanks Duane!!

The G4 is situated in an area that can't be wired, meaning no phone jack/around hence why I want to go wireless. So it sounds like I can't achieve a wireless set up with a router, it has to be an airport card and the model I have is a 1.25 Ghz so I will end up getting the Extreme. Is this something I can install do you know or let the Store folks do it?

Many thanks,
