Mac Pro 1.1 GeForce 7300 GT - What kind of DVI ?

Hello all,

I would like to ask for some information.

I'm about to buy a Mac Pro 1.1 with the 2.66 processor and graphics card, Geforce 7300.

Currently, I have a monitor LG L19WT that has both the VGA output of the DVI output and I would like to understand if there are particular problems in the use of this monitor with the Mac Pro, because I read that there are different types of DVI and I don't know if it is compatible, or even because I have to buy the cable.

Thanks to all.

Vincenzo

No problems at all. Just connect the Mac and monitor via a DVI cable.

However, I would not purchase a Mac Pro 1.1.(2006) 1.2 or even 1.3 (2008).

They are not that good. The 2006 and 2007 are limited to OSX 107 unless you do a hack.

The 008 is not that bad but the memory runs hot like the earlier ones and frequently fail.

Best is a 20o9 or later Mac Pro. The 2009-2012 are essentially the same.

Hello,

thank you very much for your information.

In reality I chose the Mac Pro because I have an extremely limited cost and in Italy the products used costs a lot..

The Mac Pro that I'm taking is a Mac Pro 2.66 GHZ with 6GB and a hard disk of 250 GB with installed Mac OS X Lion. The price I think it is very content 200 euro.

My purpose is to use it to surf the internet and to be able to go on the other 2/3 years and then replaced it with an iMac again when my girls begin to go to school.

I confirm then that I can use any monitor that have a DVI input ?

Thanks,

Vincenzo

"The graphics card has DVI-I. Right ? This should provide the signal (digital or analogue). So I can buy any DVI cable ?"

Correct. That card has DVI-I so that the DVI can drive a VGA monitor using a DVI>VGA adopter. But since your monitor has both DVI and VGA input and would use the DVI input port on the monitor and get a standard (no reason for a dual-link cable) if your monitor is 1920X1200 or less

Hello,

yesterday I took the Mac Pro and I have to say that as the machine is really very, very performance despite being a Mac about 10 years ago.

I have only one doubt now.

Currently the graphics card is the GeForce 7300 that I found not to be compatible with 10.8. I did some research and I discovered that it is possible to change the graphics card and using a hack to install the 10.8 on the Mac old.

What is the graphics card better be able to do this installation ?

I also discovered that you can still install a video card for the PC even on a Mac by modifying the BIOS.

Advice then buy a PC card and then modify it for Mac ?

Thanks,

Vincenzo

lllaass has given some great advice on some questions, this isn't one of them

  1. HD 2600 XTs - These show bootscreens, etc in 1,1. Good choice if Mac version, works in earlier OSs
  2. Radeon HD5770 - Apple versions show bootscreens in 1,1, works in many OSs, has OpenCl support
  3. Nvidia 8800 GT - 2 different versions for Apple, the EFI32 version has bootscreens, etc. Works in earlier OSs, has OpenCl
  4. GeForce GT 120 - REAL Apple ones no boot screen, MVC made 32EFI ones, all over Ebay and online, good choice for basic display
  5. Radeon X1900 XT - NG for same reason as 7300, no drivers after 10.7.5

Simple rule of thumb, with Apple Version AMD cards, if it works in 3,1 or 4,1 or 5,1, it will also work in 1,1. (Only exception is flashed 6850/6870)

With Nvidia Apple Version cards you have to pay attention, the GT120 and 8800GT are the two where this overlaps the most and you need to pay the most attention. There were even 2 separate versions of 8800GT from Apple for this reason.

Hello,

I'm sorry if I answer only now but I've been busy at work.

I'm a bit documented and in Italy I have been proposed to have two graphics cards. The GT - 120 that I have been assured it works perfectly with my Mac Pro and the ATI HD 5770 which seems to be the best one for the Mac Pro.

I wanted, however, to ask a few questions:

1. The GT - 120 does not display the boot but it does work without problems in Yosemite. If one day I need to access at startup, because maybe I have to do a reset of the PRAM, I can do it without problems, or I can even forget to do the reset of the PRAM ?

2. Can I leave the tab GT-120 and the Ge Force 7300 even if I'm using Yosemite, or do I have to remove the GE Force 7300 ?

3. The ATI HD 5770 instead allows you to either install Yosemite and see the boot right ?

Thanks,

Vincenzo
