Alerts for missed calls, texts?

Is there a settting or app that allows the iphone to give some type of alert for missed calls or texts? I know that through an "accessibbility" setting, the LED can be made to flash but that's not very practical, due to the way it functions. I have notification sounds set up but if I miss the initial ringtone, I won't know that I've missed anything until the next time I go to use the phone and on some days, that's not often.
