Q: Time Machine failing since update to Mountain Lion

For years I have been running Snow Leopard on my iMac, and Time Machine has performed flawlessly in the background.  Recently, I have updated to Mountain Lion (10.8.5), and Time Machine has been failing.  Specifically, once the backup disk is full, it just tells that TM has failed because there is insufficient space.  It is not deleting the oldest backups as it used to, and I have to manually delete backups before it will operate again.  At first, I thought it was due to my very old and slow external HDD misbehaving, but I have got a new drive which gives exactly the same problem.

 

Is this a known bug in ML, and do newer versions of OS X also exhibit this behaviour ?
