iTunes wants to update my already up-to-date iPhone

A strange bug appeared on my iTunes today. I synced my iPhone with iTunes and it wanted to update my iPhone to iOS 9.2.1 from 9.2.1! I've already updated my software to iOS 9.2.1 within 1 or 2 days after the update's official release. I had no problem since then. But today, iTunes notified me that a software update is availabe. Thing is, neither iOS 9.3 nor another 9.2.x update has been released with the exception of beta updates. The "software update" part in my iPhone's settings show that my software is up-to-date but my iTunes wants to re-update my iPhone.

I didn't join beta update programme and my iPhone has never been jailbroken. Also my iTunes' software is up-to-date. What I must do to solve this strange and mysterious bug? Any ideas or solutions?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9.2.1, 64 GB, iTunes 12.3.2, Windows 8.1

Here's what happens when I attach my iPhone to my iMac:

1. The following message pops-up:

A new iPhone software version (9.2.1) is available for the iPhone “Mark's iPhone”. Would you like to download it and update your iPhone now?

2. I click on "download and update". I get this message:

There are purchased items on the iPhone “Mark's iPhone” that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPhone. Are you sure you want to continue?

3. I click "Contunue". I get this message:

iOS 9.2.1

This update contains security updates and bug fixes including a fix for an issue that could prevent the completion of app installation when using an MDM server.

For information on the security content of this update, please visit this website:

4. I click "Next" and "Agree". I get this message:

Enter the passcode on “Mark's iPhone” to continue this iOS update.

5. I unlock my iPhone. I get this message:

There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone "Mark's iPhone". An unknown error occurred (1671).

I get this all the time. Maybe its a problem with the OS X beta. I'm running.

Thanks for your response to my email.

Errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1611, 9006.

Sometimes security software can stop your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.

Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't blocking a connection to the Apple servers.

If you still see the error message, check for USB connection issues.

Sounds like Apple decided to forego standard Revision Integrity rules on this release, by not rev'ing the version number. Is this counter to their quality systems or are they in the mode of doing whatever they want these days? While this may seem like a small thing, it points out an alarming trend in Apple's quality control, which is being reflected in their products.

The update has a different build number, though I don't recall it off the top of my head. I believe it's what's called a slipstream update.

No, the full version on your phone is ( or was) 9.2.1(13d15). The new version in the update is 9.2.1(13d20). The update notificaction left off the build number, but it still has a different full version number that follows accepted standards.

It's also a first over 8 years i've been using the iPhone. So basically what the author of this post said. My iPhone is up to date on Version 10.1.1. However when I plug it into my Mac and open iTunes, iTunes prompts to update to Version 10.1.1, same version as on my iPhone. Am not gonna mess with this and just ignore it before an update messes up my iPhone. I don't run iTunes everyday and i update via wifi on my iPhone so it's not a problem but searched to see if any other had seen this problem before.

Occasionally Apple releases a "slipstream" update that replaces the current build with a later build, but does not change the major, minor or "point" version (if there was an additional dot, it would replace that - e.g., 10.1.1.1, but Apple's version control system uses a different notation). For example, the current iOS version (in Settings/General/About) is 10.1.1(14B100). 14B100 is the build number, and it will change with a slipstream update. So check that.

Usually a slipstream update is a very minor change. I haven't seen any for iOS 10.1.1, but, if you were part of the beta, you probably would have.

EDIT: I just got a notification in iTunes to update to 10.1.1. I'll check the build after applying it. I did not get it on the phone.

I'm having this problem. How do I solve this? Was on the phone with apple support twice and they could not resolve this issue for me. When I plug my iPhone 6 into my MacBook Air and open iTunes it says there is an update for my iPhone software to version 10.1.1. I get this message there was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone try checking netowork settings. 9006. This happened to me once before and apple support was able to correct it but I forgot how. Please help

Thanks Idris.

I'm not being clear.

My ipad and phone have 10.1.1. on them.

In the summary window of itunes on each device, it shows 10.1.1 when the device is connected after a sync.

However, when I plug the device in via usb wire EACH TIME, a pop up comes up and says, 'a new version is available for this phone 10.1.1 - do I want to download it'. There is no error code. It's as if Itunes doesn't think the phone has 10.1.1 on it... yet after I hit cancel for the download, it clearly shows 10.1.1. in the summary box after the sync is done.

So again, its like it doesn't recognize 10.1.1 is already on the phone or ipad.

Thanks.
