Q: Upgraded to OS El Capitan. Ran into keychain errors. Now inconsistent with being able to even get past login screen. Tried Apple Chat and gave up after spending over 30 minutes having to repeat myself (as last I checked I'm not an idiot).

Upgraded to OS El Capitan this morning on my daughter's personal laptop as she backed up her school (apple) laptop to it as her school laptop was having issues. Had to upgrade to the latest OS as her school laptop was on the latest OS and her school docs would not open on her personal laptop (she was on Mavericks). Ran into admin password issues so connected with Chat and got that fixed but by fixing that they then created lots of keychain issues. I was directed to a support document, which did nothing. I was told to finish the upgrade to El Capitan and maybe that would fix the keychain issues - WRONG! Now it is a 50/50 chance that when I get to the sign in page - I will either get stopped there with the keychain error pop ups or it will allow me to the desktop view. I'm beyond disgusted at this point as what should have been simple has become a living nightmare.

I have checked thru the archives and found lots of keychain items but nothing seems to fix mine.

I'm getting the following:

* talagent wants to use the "Local Items" keychain.

my admin and my signon passwords do not work

so I press cancel, then I get

* Messages Agent wants to use the "local items" keychain

my admin and signon passwords do not work

so I press cancel, then I get

* CommCenter wants to use the "local items" keychain

my admin and signon passwords do not work

so I press cancel, then just the continual Messages Agent pop up error

Please help

    I give - this obviously is no more help than the chat - and the nearest genius bar is quite a drive -

    All I wanted to do is to find out how to get rid of the keychain errors - and help here - not existant

    I was complaining about trying to get rid of the pop ups that weren't even part of the original issue I was having - if I was on that laptop I could attach a screen shot that shows that there is no such item as Keychain First Aid - but alas I'm typing this on my non apple laptop, since the apple laptop is unstable at the moment with these errors.

    Well I understand why they decided to give up. As I previously stated, I am a user just like you. I am not an Apple Employee. I, like all of the other posters here, volunteer my time.

    I will give it one last shot:

    Not sure why you consider the pop-ups to be "errors". Once you reset your Keychain, did you follow step 5 and authenticate your Keychain with your Account Login password (note: If you are doing this all under a Login created for your daughter, then the Login Password would not be your Admin password, it would be her login password).

    If you have not followed Step 7, then you have not completed the instructions, and the issue will not be resolved until you do that. You must restart your Mac.

    The pop-ups are not errors - they are requests for you to input your password, and until you do that, or until you remove them from your password list, they will continue to do so.

    Also, not sure what you mean by: "the System is still locked". Aside from the pop-ups, what is "locked"?

    They gave up because they stated "I am unable to remain on the chat while we are waiting for the updates to occur".

    I'm just frustrated as a simple upgrade of an OS has created a laptop that is unusable - the various directions on the support site say to delete this or first aid that - well I've tried to reset the keychain and it doesn't fix it - and I'm not just going to delete without knowing why - probably comes from the old days of typing in DOS - always be darned sure before you start deleting such things.

    The Mac has been restarted - multiple times - which is why 50% of the time I come from the signon screen onto the desktop before the keychain error popups occur - and 50% of the time when I enter my password on the signon screen I the keychain popups appear (before the desktop appears) and I cannot get off the signon screen.

    The keychain messages are errors - as it wants you to enter the keychain password (of which nothing entered works - including the admin and signon passwords) or hit cancel, if it continues to repeat the message it is an error.  It is sure not an informational message.

    from the beginning -

    * had to upgrade to the latest OS

    * asked for an admin password which we didn't know was set up (husband set up laptop and he couldn't remember what it was)

    * went to apple chat for assistance

    * reset admin password

    * rebooted laptop

    * started getting keychain errors

    * at this point chat said to do the upgrade and here is a document (originally referenced) to do the keychain issues as they would not stay on the chat line until everything had been resolved

    * did the OS upgrade

    * OS upgrade failed first time so did it again

    * OS upgrade worked the second time

    * but keychain pop ups (errors or whatever we want to refer to them as) were back

    * went thru the step by step document as provided by chat - didn't work

    * contacted chat again - they said that they would not be able to help me without reseting laptop to factory settings which I would not allow

    * came here to try and get help

    and that has been my day for the past 4 hours, working on the apple laptop for something that should have been a simple OS upgrade that has turned into an all day thing, causing me to take today off as a vacation day from my normal day job. as the laptop is needed for online college classes for my daughter this evening.

    So you must be an Apple employee

    To re-iterate: we are all volunteers here; we do not get paid for our efforts. We spend our precious time trying to help other users.

    they said that they would not be able to help me without reseting laptop to factory settings which I would not allow

    That would be the easiest way to fix it. Not a big deal as long a you have a functional backup. It also doesn't take all that long; a bootable clone would be the fastest way; internet recovery would be the easiest, but will take longer since the entire OS has to be downloaded.

    This will be my only conribution to this thread.

    Wow, you are legendary!! I had a similar problem myself with keychain access a couple of days ago but managed to work out that if my reset keychain password wasn't the same as my login password id be asked for the keychain password every time I logged in. I'd love to suggest this to the upset guy but don't have anywhere near your level of patience...

    Hope this helps anyone else having the same problem.

    Hi upset apple customer,

    I know how frustrating this is. I am a computer lab administrator and this was happening on 20 different computers after I upgraded to El Capitan. I found two solutions. The first was already recommended to you by gail from maine. That worked for some of my machines. It sounds like you tried that and it didn't work on yours. The second solution, which you may not have tried yet, is:

    1. Go to the Keychain Access utility.

    2. Right click on the login icon. (You may need to set up your mouse for a right-click button, which many Mac mouses don't have as a default. You can set this up in System Preferences, under Mouse.)

    3. Delete the login icon. It will prompt you for several things after that. Choose Delete File and References.

    4. Restart the computer.

    I hope this works for you! Again, some of my machines responded to this fix, and others responded to gail from maine's.

    Joe

    Hi!

    The key item here is that the Chat Support had you reset the Admin Password to the laptop.  This sticks out to me due to the fact that you reset the password and then began having keychain issues.

    As a security feature, if you reset the password to an account, the Keychain password will not be reset.  They have to be reset when that user logs in.  (This doesn't apply if you reset your own password while logged in.)

    Unfortunately, if you don't know the previous keychain password - you will not be able to reset that keychain.  You need to create a new keychain to replace the inaccessible one.  You can create a new keychain in Keychain Access.  You WILL lose all of your saved items in the keychain and start fresh with a clean Keychain using this process.  But it will prevent you from having keychain error pop-ups.

    Thanks Gail for lovely feline photo..( trust a ***** cat to remain calm and rational when solving a vexing problem).

    Also, it just goes without saying doest it, that problems are not the fault of the software necessarily, but more usually that of the operator.

    I'm talking of the universal issue among Apple users, which requires a prompt from OSX software, to the administrator/user for either him or her to key in the keychain password for one of, if not all 9 support agents when signing in.

    To think that I thought it was just I who caused this train of events after not synchronising my Mac, my i-Pad & my i-phone properly immediately after I had changed my password recently.

    Well done my lady.
