upset apple customer

Q: Upgraded to OS El Capitan. Ran into keychain errors. Now inconsistent with being able to even get past login screen. Tried Apple Chat and gave up after spending over 30 minutes having to repeat myself (as last I checked I'm not an idiot).

Upgraded to OS El Capitan this morning on my daughter's personal laptop as she backed up her school (apple) laptop to it as her school laptop was having issues. Had to upgrade to the latest OS as her school laptop was on the latest OS and her school docs would not open on her personal laptop (she was on Mavericks). Ran into admin password issues so connected with Chat and got that fixed but by fixing that they then created lots of keychain issues. I was directed to a support document, which did nothing. I was told to finish the upgrade to El Capitan and maybe that would fix the keychain issues - WRONG! Now it is a 50/50 chance that when I get to the sign in page - I will either get stopped there with the keychain error pop ups or it will allow me to the desktop view. I'm beyond disgusted at this point as what should have been simple has become a living nightmare.

I have checked thru the archives and found lots of keychain items but nothing seems to fix mine.

I'm getting the following:

* talagent wants to use the "Local Items" keychain.

my admin and my signon passwords do not work

so I press cancel, then I get

* Messages Agent wants to use the "local items" keychain

my admin and signon passwords do not work

so I press cancel, then I get

* CommCenter wants to use the "local items" keychain

my admin and signon passwords do not work

so I press cancel, then just the continual Messages Agent pop up error

Please help

I'm having a similar problem, and came across this thread whilst trying to sort it out.

I haven't tried any of the suggestions yet, so don't know if they'd work - though would like to applaud everyone that has tried to help the OP, in spite of them being consistently rude and unappreciative, and acting as if it's somehow your fault that they have a problem (despite being told that the people helping are in fact fellow Apple users, not staff).

    Good work Apple communities!

Hi, all. I'd like to a put a few extra comments in on this subject. I'm having the same issue as the OP, and some of the same frustrations. I don't think he gave enough context, though, which made it hard to help him. For one thing, the instructions offered (and re-offered, to his annoyance) don't cover El Capitan. Which is the OSX level he referenced (and I have). This is possibly critical, in that like the OP, there's no "first aid" in the "keychain access" app on this OSX. At least, not that I can find.

Likewise, the ability to delete the offending keychain ("local items" in my case, not login) is severely hampered by the fact I can't unlock it. I need the password to unlock it; i need to unlock it to change the password or delete it.

    .

I did find a useful reference to something about trying this while logged into root. I've set this up, and am now waiting the ability to reconnect. (I'm doing this remotely for a client.) If I find anything productive in that, I'll post back.

Having said all that, I think the OP could've handled the exchange a bit better. Unless the help doc in question has changed since the original posting, it should've been clear that it wasn't applicable to El Capitan. (of course, the apple tech on the chat should've realized that, too). Clarifying that may have moved things forward more quickly.

And, I'd like to offer a shout out to Tim for his recent comment, and a VFB (virtual fist bump) to all and sundry for the willingness to help. As was mentioned, this is all non-Apple crew, offering time, knowledge, etc to help each other. Sharing "experience, strength and hope" (to quote some friends). And, another shout out to my "neighbor" Gail. (Hi, Gail! Greetings from near Sebago)

Thanks to all...for your willingness and contributions.

    Hi Dan,

Actually, the link I provided at the beginning is the correct link for all OS x versions. The support screens that the link goes to have been updated within the last few days, and now contain different instructions which apply to all OS x levels. Take a look at it and see if that works for you now.

It's changed alright! I was different just htis morning! (This am, I saw two blocks of almost-but-not-quite-identical instructions....With various versions of OSX up to 10.9 listed. I don't think 10.10/10.11 are THAT much different. And apparently, they've found instructions that meet them all, now.

I just looked for this topic for the first time today, so it can't be cached data on my end. I got lucky, I guess.

    Anyway....

I was getting stymied on Line 3. It rejected all the previous passwords that have been used on the machine. (Only had one account, before I activated root.)

Not sure if this is relevant - can't test it...not in front of the Mac - but, the instructions seem to be geared to the "login" keychain, and I'm struggling withe "local items" keychain. Red Herring? Key distinction? dunno. My client won't be at her office until Sunday or Monday, so I'm afraid this is going to be a Really Slow (tm) conversation.

But, as I said, I'm tickled pink there's a community of people willing to scratch their heads right along with me.

    Thanks, Gail.

I believe that following the instructions in the link you would resolve either type of message. Please let us know what you find out!

    Thanks for posting back!

Hi, All. Just wanted to come back with what I found to be the resolution for my client: in a nutshell, iCloud was "clouding" the issue. (thank you, thank you, I'll be in town all week...try the veal!). Seriously, steps to resolution:

    1. sign out of icloud

    2. create new local login (password)

    3. in Keychain Access, "local" was already unlocked.

    4. logged out, logged in. confirmed everything was working

    5. opened icloud and signed in

    6. re-selected same sync suggestions as I previously had

    7. restarted the imac

    8. everything in the garden is lovely.

I believe there was a corrupted keychain, and icloud kept bringing it back in. not completely sure, but, breaking the icloud connection was the fundamental key to it.

    Hope this helps someone.

    Cheers,

Thanks for posting your findings back here DtR! This will undoubtedly be helpful to other posters with the same issue. Glad you got it all sorted out

And enjoy the leaves! I think they are quite nice this year

Yes, thanks for the help Dan. Seems to have sorted things for me...

Will shout out if the problem crops up again, but for now all seems very lovely in the garden.

    Thanks again. tim
