Q: Upgraded to OS El Capitan. Ran into keychain errors. Now inconsistent with being able to even get past login screen. Tried Apple Chat and gave up after spending over 30 minutes having to repeat myself (as last I checked I'm not an idiot).

Upgraded to OS El Capitan this morning on my daughter's personal laptop as she backed up her school (apple) laptop to it as her school laptop was having issues. Had to upgrade to the latest OS as her school laptop was on the latest OS and her school docs would not open on her personal laptop (she was on Mavericks). Ran into admin password issues so connected with Chat and got that fixed but by fixing that they then created lots of keychain issues. I was directed to a support document, which did nothing. I was told to finish the upgrade to El Capitan and maybe that would fix the keychain issues - WRONG! Now it is a 50/50 chance that when I get to the sign in page - I will either get stopped there with the keychain error pop ups or it will allow me to the desktop view. I'm beyond disgusted at this point as what should have been simple has become a living nightmare.

I have checked thru the archives and found lots of keychain items but nothing seems to fix mine.

I'm getting the following:

* talagent wants to use the "Local Items" keychain.

my admin and my signon passwords do not work

so I press cancel, then I get

* Messages Agent wants to use the "local items" keychain

my admin and signon passwords do not work

so I press cancel, then I get

* CommCenter wants to use the "local items" keychain

my admin and signon passwords do not work

so I press cancel, then just the continual Messages Agent pop up error

Please help

The article that you reference is the one that the chat unhelpful person gave me - and there is no Keychain First Aid option anywhere in Keychain Access - so that won't work

To reset your keychain in Mac OS X 10.3 through 10.3.9:

    1. Open Keychain Access, which is in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder.
    2. From the Window menu, choose Keychain First Aid.
    3. Click Options...
    4. Click Reset My Keychain, which is under the General pane.
    5. Authenticate with your account login password.
    6. Quit Keychain Access.
    7. Restart your computer.

I have been busy clicking thru various things and have managed to unlock (at least it appears that way on the Keychain Access screen) the Local items - but System is still locked - this is so unacceptable in so many ways

You skipped the first set of instructions which are the ones that apply to you:

To reset your keychain in Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.5, and Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or later:

    1. Open Keychain Access, which is in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder.
    2. From the Keychain Access menu, choose Preferences.
    3. Click General, then click Reset My Default Keychain.
    4. Authenticate with your account login password.
    5. Quit Keychain Access.
    6. Restart your computer.

Well - if you want to be that way

Here is the entire piece that I followed multiple times

Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X

If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it can't repair, or if you don't know your keychain password, you might need to reset your keychain.

Resetting a keychain sets aside the original default keychain file and creates a new one.

And for my background - I'm 46 and work on computers every day since I graduated college as a Business Analyst - so I am not some dumb idiot but these apple laptops - this is the most disgusting experience every

The entire piece? The second part is irrelevant to anything from 10.4 and above...

And in reality - you only follow the section of the keychain reset based off what OS you have - so don't know why you thought that I would have to follow both sets of steps

I hope you do realize, that everyone here are users like you, not Apple employees. Starting to complain upfront will do you no good.

Again, I'm not sure what the issue is. The second set of instructions does not apply to you as those are for earlier versions of the OS X. I checked the first set of instructions against my own Keychain before I provided the link.

Can you tell me where, in the first set of instructions, you are running into issues, and please describe the specific issue you are encountering.

This is a user to user forum. I realize you are frustrated, but If you work with computers every day (as I do), and you are a Business Analyst, then you must be aware of the most productive way to troubleshoot a problem. At this point we need to isolate where you are running into trouble, and then maybe we can find a solution.

"Does not work" is a nebulous phrase that is meaningless. Also, since you specifically stated that you could not find Keychain First Aid, you implied that you were attempting to follow the second set of instructions. So, clearly, there is some confusion going on here....

I followed the appropriate directions for the OS that is installed on the laptop - and it DOES NOT FIX THE KEYCHAIN ERROR POPUPS!

Please read my previous post, and we might be able to proceed.

Did you reset the Keychain successfully? Have you deleted all the Keychain entries that are giving you issues? Did you supply the password (rather than Cancelling) any of the pop-ups? I added some items to my Keychain last night, and got a couple of pop-ups asking for my Keychain password. I provided it. They went away.

So you must be an Apple employee -

I thought it had reset the keychain but it obviously did not since it is still getting keychain error popups - which I think I stated above

    So step by step -

1 - reset the keychain entry

    2 - appeared to work

3 - really didn't work as still getting the errors

have no idea how to delete what entries - I'm not going to delete things willy nilly - as the instructions that you posted and I posted - do not state anything about deleting anything.

So I'm still with a very unworkable laptop at this point.

I don't dare reboot as then I have the 50/50 chance of not getting past the login screen - as the 50% of the time that I can't it is because it is hung up on these darn keychain error pop ups.

Chat gave up trying to help at that point.
