Based on the limited information that you supplied, I believe that you have a 2006 core 2 duo MBP. The newest OSX it can accept is Lion (10.7) and it can accept up to 3 GB RAM.

Snow Leopard (10.6) is the most efficient OSX from Apple and will run very well. If you install the 3 GB RAM, Lion should be able to run satisfactorily. Start with a Snow Leopard install and and upgrade it to 10.6.8.

At 10.6.8, you then can install Lion:

If you choose to install Lion, I suggest that you do sp on a separate HDD or partition the HDD and install it on a separate partition. That way you can decide what suits you best.

Also be aware that many applications that run on 10.6 will not run on 10.7. You will have to replace them with newer versions.

If your MBP is a Core Duo, then it is limited to Snow Leopard as the newest OSX.

Find your MBP serial number here:

Then enter it here:

https://checkcoverage.apple.com/

That will give the exact mode/year information.

Or open System Profiler>Hardware>Hardware Overview and post back the model identifier. If it is 2,1 or 2.2, then it is a Core 2 Duo.

Ciao.
