Q: iPod classic no longer working with dock

Hi,

I have a Windows formatted 160GB iPod Classic which used to work fine with a dock that I have as part of my mini hifi however since the update to iTunes 12 it no longer works. By no longer works, I mean that it charges and still syncs with my PC and it still charges when on the doc but I can't use the hifi's play / pause / next buttons with the ipod any more and it doesn't play music through the dock connection any more.

I've tried it with a different dock attached to radio and had a similar problem there so I don't think it's a problem with the dock. Anyone else had similar problems?

Thanks,

Ian

It's not related to iTunes 12.  The iPod has its own onboard software, and that has not been updated in a long time.  Try doing a Reset (restart) of the iPod.

    HI Kenichi,

Thanks for getting back to me. I followed the steps in the "how to reset your iPod" guide but that didn't work. Any other ideas? I would prefer to not have to format my whole ipod but I fear that that may be the next suggestion.

You could do that (a Restore using iTunes), but this problem is less likely to be resolved by a Restore.  Since you tried using more than one dock accessory, the cause is more likely to be a hardware problem on the iPod's dock connector.  The 30-pin dock connector has separate "pins" for power, data, and audio.  My guess is that the pins used for audio signals are no longer working properly (not making a connection).  This could be due to wear or damage.

Visually inspect the iPod's dock connector, in case there is some obvious debris, dust accumulation, or corrosion blocking the connection.  Also check the dock accessory side, but since you tried two of them, it is more likely that the problem is on the iPod side of the connection.

One more thing to check.  If you connect regular headphones to the iPod's headphones jack, do you still get audio from the headphones?
