Q: scanning for a virus on a Mac

Today I got the following e-mail:

"We at Launch Trampoline Park regret to inform you that our email service account through Constant Contact was recently exposed to unauthorized entry. As a result, your email address may have been accessed by an unauthorized party and you may have received an email that appeared to be from Bank of America. . . . . If you did click the link contained in the email, we suggest that you perform a virus scan on your computer or mobile phone right away. If a virus is detected, it is recommended that you remove it and change any user names and passwords you may have entered."

Unfortunately, I opened the e-mail before I received the notice. It contained a MS Word document with a basic program that did not run because of errors. I haven't noticed any problems but I would like to check for viruses. How do I do that?

I am running 10.11.3 on a MacBook Air.
