If both Messenger and a printer are having issues, it's distinctly possible that there's a problem with the local network.
Can you reach other systems on the local network, and web sites on the Internet?
What is the issue with the Apple Messenger software?
Can you reach the web interface for the HP OfficeJet, using Safari or another browser?
Can you describe the network configuration you're using? What Wi-Fi and wired connections and gateway and other core boxes — gateways, routers, DSL or cable modems, switches, etc — are connected to the network?
