Q: Siri hands free "Hey Siri" not working Feb 22 2016

I go to set up the Siri voice recognition for the hands free thing while it's plugged into the charger, and it goes off witthout a hitch the first time. I then took my iPhone and played music through it while driving. Much to my dismay when trying to get directions in an unfamiliar part of town, Siri did not respond to my pleas until I held down the button to activate Siri.

So I figured I'd reconfigure the recognition louder. Shouted from across the room, it works. Music playing, no bueno.

I've done the soft power off twice so far, and another recognition setup. Seems to work fine only when there aren't any other sounds.

I'm using an iPhone 6+ in an Otterbox Defender case. I've been using the Australian female voice in all of this, but just changed to British female after skimming over someone's old post about the others not working right, have yet to try "hey Siri" while music is playing though.

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9.2.1

    Try it without the case.

Unless plugged in, Hey Siri only works on the 6s and 6s Plus. The device has to be plugged in for Hey Siri to work on the 6 Plus. See this support document about Siri, and read the information under Hey Siri. Use Siri on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

I may be wrong but I was assuming in their car they were connected to a cable. May be a bad assumption.

Possible, but they mentioned about testing across the room. Also, in my Sonata, when I plug the device into just the USB connection, without using the OEM cable that includes the auxiliary plug, it will not work. It starts to read, and then fails, and will not charge either. If the device is charging, then I would expect that it should work. I missed the section where they stated they were trying to get directions in an unfamiliar part of town. I confess that I skimmed over that part, so my bad. But then if they weren't plugged in, that would explain the problem.

I realize now that was vague, but the 6+ was plugged in with each instance, car or in a room.

Deggie: I'll try without the case, but that's just jim cracking dandy if that's the cause. Something to complain about to Otterbox I suppose.

Not the case. Took it out, re-did the recognition.

No case and case, with music playing: went out in the hall 15 ft from the phone, Hey Siri works. Moved in closer, works, etc.

Case known to not work prior.

No case, music playing: Hall 15 ft away, doesn't work. Closer, closer, won't work. Mouth practically french-kissing the microphone, it finally works.

    Yeeeeah.

    So tired.

Thank you for illustrating the importance of reading tooltips so graciously supplied by Apple on the Hey Siri setting. If you had read my earlier post, I stated that my 6+ was charging. The assumption that is it has always been charging in this whole ordeal. It still won't work when music is playing.

Judging by the few responses I've gotten from the community thus far, I'll need to talk to Apple support and try tofigure it out with them. I'll update when I know anything.

Your tests are hard to follow even with your editing. If you are in another room, or 15 feet away, and music is playing on speakers between you and the iPhone it is going to interfere with Hey, Siri. If it works when the music is off and there is no noise then Siri is working correctly.

A few things to try which might be just throwing things at the wall to see what sticks but, nothing should take you to long. Have you tried force restarting: press and hold the Home and power buttons until the apple appears? Have you tried resetting your network settings?

P.S. French kissing the microphone is not recommended.

Yeah, sorry about that. It's frustrating enough, not enough sleep isn't helping. my thought process. But that's the gist of it.

So, I just did the hold power down until Apple shutdown, and then I also got to thinking the volume on the speaker was too high. Well, at 50% volume Hey Siri seems to work when I'm about 8 ft away with a slightly louder than normal voice.

Seems like it might be a combination of the two helping to fix it. I'll get back to you guys when I test it on my daily commute today.

Thank you very much everyone for your help thus far!

So this is what I found.

Using "Hey Siri" while iPhone 6 Plus is plugged in, while driving in my car down the highway:

    - Max volume: no response.

    - Half volume: worked three times out of five I tried using conversational voice volume, but got hung up on that screen after Siri does something and made it unresponsive until I pressed Home to make it go away.

I think at this point I'm just going to leave it be. The microphone gets crowded out by the speakers. I might as well just use the hold-home-down Siri when I need to, or do the sensible thing and find somewhere to park and yell at the phone and call it bad names perform the actions I need with precision without risking a traffic accident.

Co-pilot or Maps with no music it is.
