Q: Access old libraries

Trying to access Aperture files (Vers.3.6) on iMac (Vers.OS X El Captan 10.11.3) & get three msgs from various library files.

1. Aperture cannot access the selected library b/c file system of library's volume is not supported.

2. Versions with unavailable original files cannot be edited.

3. Need to upgrade files to Version 3.6 relaunch

First two windows are advice only & offer no solution as the files to be accessed are original.

When do upgrade, the images are blank.

Even tried opening files on Macbook (Vers OS X El Captan 10.11.1) + Aperture same vers.,where were originally processed & stored but get same msgs

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10), 21.5" Intel3.1Ghz iCore i7,16GB, FD

Could you solve the problem meanwhile? I only just came across this unanswered question.

    1. Aperture cannot access the selected library b/c file system of library's volume is not supported.

This message will appear, if your Aperture library is on an incompatible drive.   Aperture 3.6 will not open an Aperture library, if the file system is not MacOS Extended (Journaled), and may refuse to open the library, if the drive is not locally mounted.  Also, you cannot open an Aperture Library as part of a Time Machine backup. The library needs to be restored first.

Check the file system of the drive. The filesystem is shown in the "File > get Info" panel for the drive.

See Apple's support document:  Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library

    2. Versions with unavailable original files cannot be edited.

That error message will be shown, if Aperture cannot find the original image files that have been imported to Aperture.

Tell us more about the history of your Aperture Libraries.  Have you moved the libraries from a different drive or Mac? Or did you restore them from a backup?  Did you recently run any cleaning applications to remove duplicates?

HI Leonie, No haven't quite solved, but as part my normal process store original files to a separate hard drive, then process files  & export copies to usually JPGS to Mac hard drive. But aperture also created libraries. This occurred over past 5 years & 18 mths ago changed to a iMac & moved files across from original MacBook.

So it is some files that cannot open as per above msgs, will try to follow your advice + been able to track originals via finder search.

Haven't run apps to clear duplicates. Plus, over same period used 3 types of cameras hence they have own file structure. With loss of support for Aperture, don't use it as frequently  as found it was "jittery", I.e. Would jump from image to image whilst working on one image.

    APpreciate your help & advice.

If you have been copying the libraries between macs, it may be a question of file ownership. Make sure, the "Ignore ownership on this volume" flag is enabled for your external drive.

    1. Select this drive in the Finder.
    2. Choose File > Get Info.
    3. In the Info window, find the Sharing & Permissions section. You may need to click the disclosure triangle to see the details for this section.
    4. Click the lock in the lower-right corner of the Info window. Enter an administrator name and password when prompted.
    5. Select the option to Ignore Permissions on this volume (usually selected by default).

The "General" section of this Info panel will show the File System. If it is not "MacOS Extended(Journaled)" move the libraries to a correctly formatted drive.
