black triangle icon in menu bar

MacBookPro 15" w retina, late 2012

OS X 10.8.5 (ML)

Running either Safari or Numbers, with several other apps in the backgrouns, when I noticed a black equilateral triangle with rounded corners and no markings in the leftmost position of the 'icon' menus at the right end of the menu bar.

When I placed the mouse pointer on it, I got the spinning beachball, clicking it produced no action, so I launched Activity monitor to take a look at the process list, where there were no red text items saying 'such and such' is not responding.

I eventually did a restart and checked through all the accounts on the machine without seeing the icon again.

Any ideas as to what it was?

Can you take a screen shot and post it?

Command-Shift-4

Click and drag the cross-hairs across a reasonable section of the menu bar so we get an idea of where and what is adjacent to the triangle.

Try not to include personal information.

The screen shot will be placed on your desktop.

You can use Preview -> Tools -> Annotate to draw circles, boxes, arrows, and put text into the screen shot if you feel you need to draw our attention to anything specific, or block anything sensitive that got into the screen shot.

Start a reply to this tread, then drag and drop the screen shot file into the reply box. Add any additional reply text as appropriate.

"Can you take a screen shot and post it?"

Would if I could, Bob, but as mentioned above, "I eventually did a restart and checked through all the accounts on the machine without seeing the icon again."

Thanks for the Drag & Drop note regarding screen shots, though. I've been using the camera icon to insert them.

Bingo! (I think)

I had launched Garmin Express yesterday—something I hadn't done previously (to my knowledge)—and it was probably running at the time. Didn't notice anything obviously belonging to Garmin in the process list, though.

Will check it later today—right now, I'm due to grab my Garmin and head for a hike.

Contender, winner and champeen! 😁

Quit all running applications. Launched Activity Monitor and listed processes with hierarchy to let me keep an eye on one section of the process list.

Checked the menu bar, then launched Garmin Express.

And there it was: User uploaded file

And there were two Garmin processes listed in the 'current user' section of the list in Activity Monitor, one of them with the applications Dock icon displayed beside it. Didn't notice those yesterday!

Thanks again for the speedy help.

@ BobHarris:

There's the screen shot—had to do one just to try D&D insertion into a message. Thanks for the suggestion.

Barry
