Q: Authentication failed, ARD 3.8, terminal solution doesn't work

Hi,

I am on an iMac running OS 10.11.3, using ARD 3.8 to administer my kids' computer, which is also running OS 10.11.3.

I have remote administration and remote login enabled on the kids' computer, and ARD has been working fine for about a week. But suddenly today I am getting the "authentication failed" error when I try to access the other computer. Double checked system settings, but all remote options are still checked "on."

I found this article with instructions on how to use terminal to solve the problem, but it's not helping:

Re: How do you set up computers so that you can see them with Remote Desktop?

I pasted the second "sudo" command string in the article, substituting the ????? with ssh address for the kids' computer. But I just get a "command not found".

Any advice?

I'm guessing your serving up IP addresses through DHCP.

If that's true, my first guest would be that the IP address has changed.

If you run the scanner, see if it displays the IP address for the computer you're trying to connect to. If it's blank, the IP address has changed and it can no longer "find" it.

You could try to search using "bonjour" and try to connect and it will resolve to the new IP address.

If that doesn't work see if a new account has been created or if the user name was changed on the workstation.

Keep me posted and we can get it resolved. those are the most common causes for the error you have described.

    Hi Peter,

Yes, checked prefs and am using DHCP. The DNS address has not changed. On a whim I installed ARD on a different computer and was able to connect successfully. But I prefer the first computer, so would still like to figure out what's going on. Any other ideas?

    Thanks for your help :-)

HI again, also I should note that I didn't mean to mark the issue as solved. I must have clicked something by accident. Is there a way to unmark it?

    Hello!

Well I can't figure out how to change resolved to unresolved without deleting the post, but there's a thread that's pretty amusing tucked under "old operating systems" where it looks like I'm talking to myself and now others have chimed in with random comments!!

Ok, in Remote Desktop, click on the first option in the sidebar on the left named "All Computers"

    ard1.png

Find the computer you cannot connect to, click once to highlight it, and then press the "Delete" key on the keyboard. It will ask you to confirm deletion. (the image below is for example only, your message will have your son's computer info)

    ard2.jpg

Now return to the "Scanner" and with whatever method your using (Bonjour, IP address, IP Range) find your son's computer to add it back in to Remote Desktop. You'll need to double click to enter the username and password. If that's successful, you should be able to connect! Keep me posted!

Yes! I assumed the problem was more complicated and didn't even think to try something like that. Thanks!

    Resolved now :-)
