there are podcasts in folders that no longer show up in iTunes

I have a large collection of podcasts. Many podcasts that exist in folders are no longer showing up in iTunes. Haven't changed anything recently. iTunes on my MacBook Pro, podcasts on an external drive connected by FireWire. Some podcast sets are OK some have 5 or 10 in iTunes, but another couple hundred on the disk in directories that iTunes is not indexing.
