I just replaced my Apple TV with the 4th generation model. The 4th generation model no longer has an optical audio port. How do I connect the Apple TV to my receiver with surround sound?

One last point is make sure your TV does not have an optical out already. If it does you can simply run the hdmi into the tv and use its built in splitter then run the optical out from the tv to the reciever.
I tried this option and can't get Dolby 5.1 to work. My 4th Gen Apple TV is connected to my TV via HDMI. I am then running a digital optical cable from my TV to my receiver. No Dolby 5.1. Works with my cable box and worked with my old 2nd Gen apple TV. I am trying Netflix and ABC app
Have you tried the various setting options under the Dolby Digital setting? If on auto, it is seeing the TV speakers and not the pass through.
