I want to remove my music library from my ipad as i have run out of memory. I bought a usb stick with lightning connection, but cannot transfer the music.

I want to be able to plug the stick into ipad when i need to listen to the music, but dont want it stored on the ipad.

Is this possible ?

Just so you know, no one here really cares what you buy.

You can purchase a WiFi flash drive ($79.95, 128 GB) and put the music from your iTunes Library on your computer onto that. You can then play the music that is on your flash drive using the built in WiFi to stream it.

Not using a USB stick (for a start the iPad has no USB port and even if you use one of those double-ended USB-Lightning memory sticks you can't move the iPad's music library onto them). To do what you want you need to subscribe to Apple Music and use the iCloud Music Library, or subscribe to iTunes Match. That way you have all your music in the cloud and can stream it to any iOS/OS X device from there, or download any subset of it to any device as required.

No need for sarcasm, its just that Apple are so frustrating, as my 4th generation iPod is barely useable, as the apps are out of date due to IOS updates, I now only use it for music storage.

I don't think anybody understands my issue.

I don't want to stream, copy from PC or laptop, join Apple Music, or Match etc.

I just want to store MY iTunes library on a usb memory stick, by copying from my iPad. Then delete from iPad to enable more space for other things like apps etc. This is obviously not something Apple want you to be able to do, so I rest my case.

That wasn't sarcasm, we are all volunteers here trying to help other users. Comments like yours really aren't appreciated and I truly do not care what device you buy. That is purely your choice.

You cannot copy the music from the iPad to a USB stick. Syncing of music has always been one way from the computer iTunes Library to the iOS device. Do you not use a computer to maintain your iTunes library? Is this Apple purchased music or music from other sources? How did it get placed on the iPad in the first place? What are you using to back up this music?

If you want to just use a tablet and be able to access the file management system and copy things back and force then yes you did make a poor choice for your needs. Switch to an Android tablet which you can find for low cost while trading security for convenience and access. If you would like more security than Android affords but still have full file access then go with the Surface which will cost you more. Either will meet the needs you say you have.

I accept you are volunteers, and your help is appreciated, but please do not take the stance that Apple are the be all and end all, I could not praise Apple highly enough, when I got my Ipod, but I now see the shortcomings of the device.

I use a laptop to maintain my iTunes library, most of which is purchased from iTunes, but I have more music than the total capacity on my iPad, so I have to pick and choose what I want on the iPad. The music was either synched to the Ipad or downloaded directly. What I wanted to do is to have a full 32gb of music stored on the usb flash drive, that I could plug into my Ipad when I am away from wifi; thus negating the need to actually have the music stored on the iPad.

I did not make a poor choice for my needs, as the problem I have is not made public, probably for good reason I think. I also have Android phones, and tablets.

No one is taking the stance that Apple is the be all and end all. We just have no interest in what platform you decide on. I'd say most of us would say you should buy what best meets your needs. Life is too short to waste it getting frustrated with tools that don't do what you want.
