Q: Photos album disappeared

Hello community,

I'm looking for some help with an iPhone 5 IOS 9.2.1

Recently all albums in photos disappeared and the photos are only viewable under photos --> moments.

This person had the exact same problem: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/177550/photos-album-disappeared

- Force quit the application does not resolve the problem

- Turning the phone off does not resolve the problem either.

- Making a back up in iTunes failed 3 times before a successful attempt.

     * I'm scared that if I restore from this back up it will fail and all data will be lost. Also as someone told in the thread I posted above it is most likely a mistake in the software which requires a fresh install of IOS to resolve.

All data except from videos/photos can be backed up with iCloud, there's not enough iCloud storage to do this for the videos/photos as well.

So how can I get all videos/photos from the iPhone or extract them from the back-up?

I'm not sure if using a third-party app is safe, is the so called application Syncios in the other thread advisable?

I asked her to check her settings again, apparently iCloud Photo Library is NOT on.

However My Photo Stream is and iCloud Photo Sharing is off.

The explains, why only a part of the photos are in iCloud. my Photo Stream is keeping the photos only for a limited time.

Has iCloud Photo Library always been disabled or only recently?

If iCloud Photo Library is off,and never has been enabled,  all photos currently on the iPhone are full resolution photos.  If she just recently turned iCloud Photo Library off, some photos may not have downloaded back from iCloud to the iPhone.

She should be able to download all photos that are stored in full resolution by connecting the iPhone directly to the computer. See this link:  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201302

The standard option form Windows is not working correctly,as doing only gets 123 photos from the phone, most of them are not even viewable.

That  might be the case, if iCloud Photo Library had been enabled, and the photos have not downloaded back from iCloud, before  iCloud Photo Library had been disabled. Then the iPhone has only optimized versions for some photos, that will not show in the Import panel.

And the same reason that is preventing the albums from showing, is preventing the photos from showing in the Imort panel.

Can she download photos at all?  One way to get photos off an iPhone is to mail them.  If the USB connection cannot access the photos, try to select the most precious photos that need to be saved on all accounts and to send them by mail.

Her iPhone got repaired about a year ago, she lost all photos on it but she had iCloud Photo Library enabled at the time I guess.

This is why those photos are in the cloud an all photos that are on the phone itself are not.

If photos are editable on her phone this means that those are full resolution photos right?

This is why I don't understand why Windows is not able to get those photos of the phone.

I've found that thread you linked as well and did exactly that but as I told you it only got 123 photos of the phone and most of them are not viewable.

What is the "import panel" if this is related to "Photos" is Photos available for windows as well?

Also what do you mean with download photos at all?

All photos from iCloud have been downloaded to her computer.

Is there no application that can bundle all those photos or online drive that can be used to move all photos quickly from the phone in the Cloud?

I thought most mail applications had a file limit of about 25mb which means only about 15 high resolution photos can be mailed at a time =/

Yes, that means that the photos are stored locally on the iPhone.  But not necessarily, that the photos are in the camera roll.  If the photos on her iPhone have been synced to the iPhone using iTunes, the photos cannot be downloaded from the iPhone. Without third party applications the only way to get them off the iPhone is to mail them.

See:  Sync photos to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in iTunes - Apple Support

    • You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures taken by your device, or saved to it, from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device, email the photos from the device to yourself. Then download the photos from the emails to your computer.

Also what do you mean with download photos at all?

All photos from iCloud have been downloaded to her computer.

I wanted to see, if the photos in question, that do not show, when the iPhone is connected to the computer, can  at least be sent by mail.  This way, your friend could try to open the photo on her computer and serif the file has any issues.

There are third-party apps, but I don't know them and have never tried any of them.

That is true, but I wanted her to try to download at least one of the photos this way, so we can have a closer look on the photos. The Photos.app on the iPhone does to provide any information about the photos at all. On her PC she can look at the file type and the pixel size.

Ok, I will tell her to e-mail a couple of photos to herself to see if they are openable if they are downloaded from the mail to a pc.

Also I will tell her to check the file type/pixel size.

You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures taken by your device, or saved to it, from your device to your computer.

If pictures have never been synced to the computer is it possible to import them on a Windows computer with an alternative way or in iTunes itself not using the standard option that Windows offers?

I do not have a Windows PC - you know probably more about them than me. Perhaps Demo can answer that part of your questions.

I Don't have a Windows machine either, but there are other ways to move photos from an iOS device to a computer. I have an app that will transfer photos via WiFi. This is the app that I have, but there are plenty of others available in the App Store.

Photos can not be transported to a computer using iTunes. iTunes is the conduit through which one can sync photos on the computer back to an iOS device.
