Periodically something causes trash all to come up rather than trash selected. Then I lose all my history and have to request a recovery. What causes this.

What causes "trash all"to appear rather than "trash selected

" in email. I don't notice the difference and then lose all my history and need to request recovery. What causes it and how can I avoid it?

iPhone 6, iOS 9.2.1

Pre ios 9, there were so many users complaining about having to select all emails to delete instead of having a "trash all" feature.

Those users provided feedback to Apple, and this feature came out with iOS 9 or later, as I didn't pay attention to it.

You can still go to your mail - hit edit - and then select the emails you want to delete.

IF you don't select any emails you'll see the trash all icon.
