It's possible. I have a mid 2007 IMAC 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I am currently running Lion 10.7.5. Last night I upgraded from 2 GB ram to 6 GB ram in preparation of upgrading to El Capitan. You can buy this ram kit from OWC for ~$100. My system is running great with the new ram, very fast. Also, I  believe you will have to upgrade to Snow Leopard first before moving to El Capitan.
