Q: The right way to upgrade an OS X device being managed by Profile Manager

I'm new to Profile manager and I have an office of about 15 macs that I support and manage via Profile Manager.

I was wondering if Apple has documented a recommended way to upgrade OS X from 10.10 to 10.11 within Profile Manager or does it have to be performed on each computer manually.

Thanks in advance!

Profile Manager is for managing settings it is not for managing software updates. While JAMF Casper Suite is a set of tools which covers both what Profile Managers does (settings), and software updating you can setup and use another tool in addition to Profile Manager specifically for software installing and updating.

In your case and that of many others you might want to look at a free tool called Munki, see https://www.munki.org/munki/

It allows both auto installing applications, providing a 'store' giving users the choice of installing optional applications, and also provides a way to automate pushing updates to those users. Using another free tool called createOSXinstallPkg you can create an Apple Installer pkg file which Munki can 'push' to client Macs to install an upgrade of OS X from say 10.10 to 10.11. See https://github.com/munki/createOSXinstallPkg

Munki can also control Apple Software updates to automate things like going from 10.11.2 to 10.11.3. See https://github.com/munki/munki/wiki/Apple-Software-Updates-With-Munki
