Officejet 6500 Scanner Doesn't Work on iMac

I have a printer, scanner, fax Officejet 6500A. Before updating my modem from my internet provider my wireless printing and scanning worked perfectly. After adding a new modem only the printer works. I purchased a USB cable to connect to iMac (running OS - El Capitan). The printer works fine but scanner doesn't work. I uninstalled HP applications, deleted printer from System Preferences, restarted the computer and reinstalled the printer with latest drivers and added the printer in System Preferences. Printer works fine but still no scanner. When calling up the printer/scanner in System Preferences I should see two options, one to print and other to scan. Only printer queue appears. Not using any apps, just what was supplied by HP. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the information. Before I tried your suggestion I once again downloaded the HP drivers. This is probably the 8th time I have done it. And, for some reason this time the scanner worked. What I did notice was in System Preference when installing the printer, on the same line, you should see the words Multifunction. For some reason that did not appear earlier. For what ever, reason, its working now. Thank you for you help.
