Q: ios 9 update bricked ipad 2

First off, I would like to point out the ridiculousness of the problems created by this update, which I am sure many others already have pointed out.

Next, the background: My mother owns an iPad 2. Recently apps were refusing to work because the latest version of iOS was not installed. She was operating on v5.blah.blah.blah which I will admit is very old and sad, but regardless, I attempted the update only to receive an "unknown error (9)". The iPad is now bricked. iTunes wanted to do a factory restore to resolve the issue, so restoration was started only to receive another "unknown error (9)" again. Now the iPad is stuck on one of two screens. 1. A gray apple with a crack from the bottom left diagonally moving to the top right. 2. The classic connect to iTunes screen. iPad will not allow me into recovery mode (In iPad itself, not iTunes) or using button combination to do a forced factory reset. It acts as if it is going to work, and then the screen briefly flashes every color of artifact (lines) across the screen for like 200ms and then it shuts off. If I connect it to iTunes, and try to do a update or a recovery/reset to factory default, I get the same "unknown error (9)". I have exhausted every option, maybe not visited every forum, but enough to see I am having a unique experience (surprisingly) with iOS 9. Pretty disappointing having a premium quality paperweight instead of an iPad.

 

Any ideas or suggestions I will take. Just please read the whole story... I don't want the stupid responses "Is it plugged in?" , "Is it turned on?" , "Have you tried plugging it into iTunes and doing a etc...?" I already tried another 3 times today to do a factory reset both on device and iTunes, and a straight update. Next step is going in to an apple store and getting help, which will probably result in the typical "Too bad, buy a new one" response. T_T
