resetting PRAM blacks out display!

Question

I was troubleshooting the "Yosemite does not seem to support the volume controls" problem and I did the Parameter Ram reset (cmd-opt-p-r)

Unfortunately, after doing that there is NO image on the computer screen (a 30" cinema display that worked perfectly 5 minutes before)

Help!

OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), FCP7 old Mac Pro / FCP X new mac

rebooting in SAFE mode appears to have fixed this, although there were a couple of reboots required to make everything work right again.

Alas, though apple hardware is lovely, software quality has continued to slowly degrade over the years.
