Q: iPhone 5 software update

My iPhone 5 says my software is up to date when I go into Settings>General>Software Update, but it is stuck on ios 7.1.2.  I have also tried connecting to iTunes by plugging into my Mac, but newer software does not download.  Why won't the iphone download the newest version of ios?

iPhone 4 can only run iOS 7.1.2. In order to run anything newer then that you need to have newer hardware.
