Q: Folders ending with ".com" can't be opened anymore

Hello everyone,

Has anyone else besides me had the following problem?:

For some reason, folders inside the finder app that end with .com have became: "Packages" and have stopped functioning as folders.

I noticed that if I rename them, for example changing: "Documents.com" to "Documents" the folders become normal again.

That wouldn't be a solution for me though. I never had this issue before, I just noticed it yesterday but I don't remember making any updates.

I'm running Mac OSX 10.11.3, El Capitan on a MBP and any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), 8GB RAM

Why are you naming your folders with a ".com"?

Hello Duane, thank you for your reply.

    I build websites using MAMP.

On my "htdocs" folder I have folders named: .net, .org, .com ect.

What happens when you double-click one of these folders?

You should avoid using periods in folder names. See OS X: Cross-platform filename best practices and conventions - Apple Support

As an alternative I would use _com

A window with the finder icon on the left pops up saying:

There is no application set to open the document “Folder.com”.

Search the App Store for an application that can open this document, or choose an existing application on your computer.

Choose Application   -   Cancel   -   Search App Store

    Thanks for the link.

For years I used .com as folders names and I never had any problems until now.

I just changed one of the folders to name_com and the local website stopped working.

I change it back to name.com but it seams to have totally have ruined the site : (

Back up all data before proceeding.

Please select the text on the line below by dragging across it. Don't include the blank space at the end of the line. Only the text should be highlighted.

    xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the Terminal application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V, then press the space bar.

Now switch to the Finder and and select the item(s) in question. Drag into the Terminal window. More text will be added to what you entered.

Click in the Terminal window to activate it, then press return.

Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear. You can then quit Terminal.

Thank you so much for the detailed directions Davis,

I did as you instructed, and Terminal returns this message:

xattr: /Users/apple/Documents/test.com: No such xattr: com.apple.FinderInfo

    user-MacBook-Pro:~ apple$

After I quit terminal, the folder remains the same as a "package"

Although the problem is not the same, please follow the instructions in this support article to reset the Launch Services database.

Instead of typing the command as directed in the article, I suggest that you copy and paste it from the web page into the Terminal window. Make sure you select the whole line before copying. One way to do that is to triple-click anywhere in the line.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before proceeding. You may have to log out or restart to see a change.

FWIW, El Capitan, at least my install, will certainly let you create folders with a .com suffix and they remain and act like folders. Do you have RCDefaultApp installed or any third-party App/Preference Pane that allows you to assign files types?
