Q: Windows 7 and 10 do not connect completely to iPhone 6s

Hi all,

My first post here after having just bought a new iPhone 6s a couple of weeks ago.

I took a few photos with the iPhone just to see how well it did and then I wanted to download them to my Win7 PC using the lightning to USB cable. The first time I tried doing so it seemed to work fine - Windows found and loaded the drivers necessary and then in the "start/computer" screen it showed the disk drives and also the Apple USB device. I clicked on it and found my photos (pretty much the same as downloading photos from the memory card of my digital SLR) and then downloaded them to a new folder on the D: drive.

I then unplugged the iPhone and plugged it back in, got the "device connect" sound twice and again no problems.

However, a couple of days later (after rebooting the PC) I tried again, and now the PC does not show the Apple USB device in the "start/computer" screen. I also only hear the "device connect" sound once, and at the same time I hear the "default beep" sound. Strange thing is, iTunes does load and recognize the iPhone, and I can back it up to the PC, and download ringtones to the iPhone. But still no way to get my phones out of the iPhone! One other note - iTunes says that there is a new version of firmware available - but the "newer" version is the same as what is one the phone now (9.2.1).

Sane issue with my other computer which is Windows 10 machine - first time plugging in the iPhone via USB it worked just fine (loading drivers, etc), but after rebooting it no longer recognizes the iPhone as far as accessing my photos on the iPhone.

Tethering the PCs to the iPhone works just fine as well. - I was actually surprised that tethering works as well as it did.

Both PCs have the latest updates and patches installed, and same for the iPhone.

Device Manager on both PCs shows the Apple USB drivers present and with no arrows or other warnings - the properties tab says "device is working normally",

Any thoughts as to what is going on here? I guess I don't understand why the iPhone would connect and show in the "start/computer" screen at first, and then, after a couple of days and reboots later, I get the problems described above!

Thanks for any and all help....

Ted

    Hello Lokie_Driver,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand that iTunes and Windows is recognizing you have a device connected, but you're unable to import anything from the iPhone.  I suggest that you follow the steps outlined below to get your computer and iPhone to trust each other.

    Get help

If you tap Trust or Don't Trust but iOS doesn't accept your answer, or if the Trust alert won't appear, follow these steps. Try again after each:

    1. On your computer, especially with Windows 10, check that you have the latest version of iTunes
    2. Disconnect and reconnect your iOS device.
    3. Restart your iOS device and your computer.
    4. Reset your Trust settings.
    5. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.*

For more help, contact Apple Support.

About the ‘Trust This Computer‘ alert on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    Take care.

    Hi Alex,

    Thanks for the reply!

#1 - I do have the latest version of iTunes (12.3.2.35)

#2 - I have done that many times!

    #3 - Same - many times

    #4 & #5 - done.

    Still doesn't work though.

However, I *think* I may have found the reason - if there are no photos on the phone, then it won't fully connect. If there are photos, then it will fully connect and then I can download them. I always cut and paste the photos to my hard drive and to free up storage space on the iPhone.

Does that make sense - that Windows call tell right away if there are photos to download or not???

Sometimes the iPhone forgets which computer it has trusted, and asks the same question again....?

Also, iTunes keeps saying that there is a newer version of iOS for the phone available (9.2.1) but the iPhone itself says it is up to date....?

Being new to Apple (but not computers - I've been working with them since the bad old days of DOS and Atari 400s !) does Apple send out updates with the same version number? I wouldn't think so, but I don't know much yet about how Apple does things.

    Thanks again!!
