Q: DNS unknown host message
We have a Mac Mini local network for use with a department in school. It has a .private domain. We also use a proxy server for the internet. There are 20 Mac clients which use the server for shared folders, assigned printers and machine specific profiles (for docks, system preferences etc.). Everything was working fine until two days ago. Now Profile Manager keeps displaying 'pending' or 'in progress' instead of pushing profile updates out to the clients. I've checked DNS details, using dig -x and nslookup. Everything seems to be configured correctly. For some reason some clients now have a proxy message when accessing https (I believe this is required for profile manager). I've added exclusions for hosts and domains. Now the following message appears:
Unknown Host
Description: Unable to locate the server named "mia.lhs.private" --- the server does not have a DNS entry. Perhaps there is a misspelling in the server name, or the server no longer exists. Double-check the name and try again.
The strange thing is it's only on some clients. Other Macs can access Profile Manager within Safari without any issue. We can also use Network Utility to ping and lookup relevant server details.
I've had a look at the logs and can't see anything standing out. Would someone please be able to help me attempt to resolve this? Worse case scenario I'll just have to nuke the server and start again but that's a last resort.
Thanks in advance! Chris
