I have read and understand Apple's simple and straightforward instructions for changing the email address you use for your Apple ID at Change your Apple ID - Apple Support.
Easy but for one thing. I want to change the email address we use for purchasing apps (iOS and OSX app stores) and for iCloud (FWIW we are paying for extra storage to handle a potload of photos). I don't want to lose purchase history and iCloud stuff, of course!
However, I *already* own an (unused) appleid at the email address which would be the new target! From the cited instructions, I take it this won't work. Correct? The *old* email address (which targets a private domain) should be deleted! Yet I see no way easily to do so. What's a po' boy to do?
