My hard drive 500GB Flash is half way full but I deleted almost all my files.

Anybody has an Idea  what could take that much space

    Hi Alex:

    Have you emptied the Trash.

It will not free up space until then.

Try downloading and installing OmniDiskSweeper https://www.omnigroup.com/more it sorts all your files by size and will show you where all the space is being used.

Also see this video on how to use it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT2Bz1VIfRw

If you have Bootcamp/Windows installed, it will show up as "Other" by clicking  > About This Mac. This can take up a lot of space.

If you don't have Windows installed, try reindexing Spotlight. Your computer may not be accurately finding your files. Reindexing Spotlight will make Spotlight "forget" your file layout and "find" the files again. You will not lose any data by doing this.

Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Apple Support

In step 4, you are adding the entire hard drive (Macintosh HD) and then removing it in step 6.

And still more than already said:

    Open SystemPreferences->TimeMachine

    Time Machine.jpg

it may say "local snapshots":  these are put on your macBookPro when there is enough free space on the disk of Apple laptops.

You have a flash drive (SSD) this benefits when you do as minimum writes as possible:

you can turn the local snapshots off by a Terminal command:

Open Terminal (in the Utilities folder):  copy/paste the following command after the cursor:

    sudo tmutil disablelocal

(it asks you to type in your password after that)

    then quit Terminal.

The space that was taken by the local snapshots will be freed up.

important things from Time Machine. Takes about two days but it is maybe the best.

Do not follow the bad advice that circulates on this site to modify the way Time Machine works. Use it as designed or not at all.
