Q: lengthen the thunderbolt connection cable with a female to male cable

I have a thunderbolt display connected to a retina display 15" macBook pro.  the thunderbolt display cable is short so I can only have the  macbook pro about 2 feet away from the display.  Can I use a female thunderbolt to male thunderbolt cable with female connected to existing thunderbolt cable and male connected to macbook pro which would then be another meter away from the display?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

    I have never seen a TB cable extender.  You can buy a long TB cable and connect directly to the TB port of the display.

    May be no TB extender in market, so not cheap but realistic alternative will be thunderbolt dock ( or thunderbolt peripherals with daisy chain port ).

    current:

    [MacBook]<---TB---[TB Display]

    your plan:

    [MacBook]<---TB---<<---TB---[TB Display]

    alternative:

    [MacBook]<---TB--->[TB dock]<---TB---[TB Display]
