Q: Multiple Rendition EPUB

Hi there,

We have built a multilingual EPUB following the Multiple Rendition spec (http://www.idpf.org/epub/renditions/multiple/). This book contains nine different languages (de, en, es, fr, it, ja, nl, ru, and zh) and passes epubcheck.

However, the book only opens in English in iBooks, regardless of the user's system language settings. For example, I change the system language to German, restart my Mac, open iBooks, and then open the multilingual EPUB which contains the German translation. Also, de is specified in the container.xml file (per the spec), which means iBooks should open the book using the German translation. However, iBooks only opens the file in English, regardless of the language setting.

(It's also worth noting that Adobe Digital Editions just craps and dies when trying to render the Multiple Rendition EPUB, but that is not surprising.)

Has anyone else here tried building an EPUB using the Multiple Rendition spec? If so, what has your experience been like with iBooks? Are you able to open the book in some other reader and have it switch languages? If so, which reader are you using?

Thanks,
