Is it possible with the serial number of an Xserve to read the configuration and the production year?

This will show you the Model and year : https://checkcoverage.apple.com/
though specific configuration (like 1To Disk instead of 500Go for ex) will not be determined. You can only know by booting up the Xserve (or opening it and looking into it.)
http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/ is extremely useful. Type in the serial number, and it will provide quite a bit of information on the unit.
