Q: iMac 5k 27" double pixelated Photoshop HELP

Hi all,

So my work just bought me a new 27 inch iMac with Retina 5k display (running OSX El Capitan Version 10.11). We installed the complete Adobe package and all but then when I started working in Photoshop I noticed a weird problem. Everything in my Photoshop is 'double pixelated'. So when I open a file of 2000x1500px, the size I see at 100% is 1000x750px. When I zoom in to 200% the size I see is 2000x1500px but of course everything is blurry.

I already searched the internet for other people having the same problem and possible solutions but no luck. I can change the resolution to 5k (5120x2880, currently 2560x1440) but then everything is twice as small (think of Finder, browser and also the tools and everything in Photoshop). I almost can't read anything on my screen anymore with this resolution so that's not what I want at all...

I also searched the forums of Adobe to see if maybe it's their problem. All I could find was to update to the latest version of Photoshop, which I already have. My sister has the same size iMac but 4k with the same resolution (2560x1440) and there are no problems at all.

Does someone know how to resolve this?

Please, let me know. Thanks!

Sincerely,

Natascha

You may want to pick up the telephone and call AppleCare, if the computer is less than 90 days old you have 90 days of complimentary AppleCare. Someone should be able to give you a hand. If you aren't aware of AppleCare, please click http://www.apple.com/support/complimentary/

There's nothing wrong with her iMac.

I agree there is nothing wrong with her iMac, however sometimes speaking to someone and having them guide you is much better than trying to understand someone's posts. Your posts are excellent, but for some reason she appears to not be totally understanding you and she may benefit by some personal hand holding.

    Just a thought...

True. Of course AppleCare is more than likely going to respond by saying call Adobe but one never knows.

While I know that some people have experience that type of response, my experiences with AppleCare over the past 10 years have never given me any advice to call another vendor. A little persistence sometimes help and the ability to follow simple directions never hurts though. .

I didn't mean to sound like I was dissing AppleCare. Personally I haven't had an issue with them but I believe their normal policy is not to support 3rd party apps. Anyway, can't hurt to call them.

Just to add, if you took a ruler and placed it on a 5K iMac in native 5120x2880 and measured a 500x700px image it would measure approx 2.29" x 3.21". The same image running in the default 2560x1440 would measure 4.58" x 6.42".

I wish it worked like that but that's the whole problem. What you're saying is that in 2560x1440 the image should be twice as big as in the resolution of 5120x2880, right?

Here you can see that everything except the image becomes twice as big. Both are in 100% as you can see.

Yes, I see. I suppose you would have to ask Adobe how they decide to project "Actual Size" at various resolutions.

I hate to open a new can of worms but, I neglected to mention that a 500x700px image that was saved at 72dpi will display on screen as a different size as one saved at 144dpi and one saved at 300dpi… etc. at whatever scale the display is set to.

    Hi nataschakater,

Did you get an answer from Applecare or Adobe?  I noticed the same thing with a 4K display, and I thought that photoshop supports retina scaling.  The problem (if it is) is similar to something I found also but outdated:

I too would love to know what solution you are using as I now need to work on PSD web files at 200% to see them at the size they should be at 100%.

We installed the complete Adobe package

What package is that?  Did you use the same version of Photoshop on another Mac without this problem?  If so what system was on the other Mac?

Have you gone thru all of the Photoshop preference panes to see if there's a setting that could be the cause of this issue?

When you open an image file what are the pixel dimensions in the Image ➙ Image Size menu window?  This is what is shown in an older PS version, CS3:

    Photoshop001.jpg

The pixel dimension does not change when you change the viewing size:

I am (or was) experiencing the same issue with my new 5k iMac also (as most new buyers are probably too). Yes, it was definitely annoying (not knowing how to fix this "photoshop" matter, and with other apps). I tried changing the resolution, but this did not help. I get the pixel thing (with the 5k display), but I was still in the dark, not knowing what to do (in making photoshop normal again, as what I was used to). After searching the internet for answers, my dilemma was finally over - yay (or so far)! Just highlight the (photoshop) image app icon (in Applications) and bring up the "Get Info" window, and check the box "Open In Low Resolution", then open the app with an image, bata boom batter bing, small image issue fixed!

Open apps in Low Resolution mode

If you notice that an app looks different than you expect on your Retina display, try opening the app using Low Resolution mode:

    1. Quit the app if it's open.
    2. In the Finder, choose Applications from the Go menu.
    3. In the Applications folder that opens, click the app's icon so it's highlighted.
    4. Choose Get Info from the File menu.
    5. Place a checkmark next to "Open in Low Resolution"
      Open in Low Resolution
    6. Close the window and open the app again.

You can also contact the developer of the application to see if they offer an update to the application for the Retina display.
