Q: imessage automatically turns off everytime

I used to turn on airplane mode (for battery saving purposes) or switch off my iPhone 5s, which did not affect my iMessage as everytime airplane mode is turn off/I switch my phone back on, I immediately receive all messages.

however, after switching to an iPhone 6s, after turning off airplane mode/switching on my iPhone 6s (I don't know which of these is the problem), my iMessage gets turned off automatically, I can't receive iMessages, and I have to manually activate iMessage by connecting to wifi, etc etc.

also, I do get occasional pop-ups of messages saying that "iMessage/Facetime may apply charges" (something along those lines), and I always press "ok", should I not?

thanks!

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.2.1

    Hello there, c0ej.

It sounds like you're wanting to know if you should be receiving iMessages on your iPhone when you've turned Airplane Mode on. The following Knowledge Base article explains what services are disabled when Airplane Mode is active:

Use Airplane Mode on your iOS device

When Airplane Mode is on, you'll see in the status bar of your screen or on your watch face. In Airplane Mode, these wireless features are turned off:

    • Cellular (voice and data)
    • Wi-Fi
    • Bluetooth

If you have a device with iOS 8.2 or earlier, Airplane Mode will also turn off GPS.

If you'd like to still receive iMessages notifications you can turn on Wi-Fi:

Use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in Airplane Mode

If the airline allows it, you can use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth while in Airplane mode. You just need to turn them on separately. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Wi-Fi or Settings > Bluetooth.

You can also turn on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth from the Control Center. Swipe up from your Home Screen and tap or .

To use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your Apple Watch, just turn off Airplane Mode.
