OS X El Capitan - Wallpaper won't save

Hi,

So randomly my iMac (27" mid-2011 with 22" Cintiq monitor) has started having issues with it's background images. It's not a major issue but more of an annoyance and would like to know any causes for this or if possible how to fix it.

I use to have a custom image as my background but after turning on my mac yesterday the image defaulted to the 'El Capitan' mountain range image on both monitors. I tried reseting to the previous image but found when I opened Desktop & Screen Saver my background disappeared and went black. Within Desktop my custom image was still selected but the preview window had a question mark.

Since then I've tried reseting to my previous image, an apple image, solid color, deleted files and folders, all while restarting my mac each time only to keep defaulting to the El Capitan image. When I check my Mission Control bar above and try to add another desktop the preview windows come out gray as if there is no background.

Again nothing major but just a real annoyance and was wondering if anyone else has run into this or has any solutions.

Thanks.

I'm having the same type of problem. On my Mac Pro, I have 4 internal hard drives. My photos library is not on the system disk, but is on another drive.

All of a sudden, I lose my wall paper on reboots. and it defaults to a stock picture on one monitor and a blue screen on the other. I used to have a custom photo on each.

this is more than an minor annoyance to me....

I've deleted the .plist for the desktop and for system prefs, doesn't matter.

I've repaired my disks, repaired my photos library, checked that none of the photos are unresolved references....I'm at the end of my patience. I do not want to place my photos library on the system disk - it is already fairly large and will continue to grow.
