Opps. It has the manual way to uninstall but I missed the Mackeeper download button at the bottom.
susan5351:
You can use the manual instructions int the MegaBackup manual removal for Mac section of the article but DO NOT DOWNLOAD AND USE MACKEEPER!
Thank you! I went through the process and moved MegaBackup to the trash. I still have something called Mac Clean Plus listed in Applications. Should I do the same and get rid of that, too. And MacKeeper is shown in Applications. I have no idea how any of these got there.
There is also another called Advanced Mac Cleaner. All of these have a date of Feb. 22.
Remove both of them.
For Advance Mac Cleaner:
How to Remove Advanced Mac Cleaner Virus
for Mac Clean Plus
Download and run the free MalwareBytes Anti-Malware for Mac
This app was created by one of the top contributors in these ASC forums. It's completely safe. Just be sure to download it from the developer's site which I linked to.
the Malwarebytes app might also remove the Advance Mac Cleaner. Try it first before going the long manual method in the first link.
I followed the directions above to remove Advanced Mac Cleaner as well as Mac Clean Plus. They still appear in my Applications file. How will I know if they are gone?
You'll know they are gone when those apps are deleted from the hard drive and any supporting files.
Download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here (and recommended by Apple Support personnel) in the ASC to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.
The Etrecheck app can help locate any files that might be on the hard drive that would belong to either of those apps.
Here are my results from Etrecheck. Still don't know if Advance Mac Cleaner or Mac Clean Plus are gone.
EtreCheck version: 2.9.6 (256)

It appears MacKeeper was installed on your Mac and then uninstalled incorrectly. So bits and pieces of it are still on your Mac and they are crashing from time to time.
[running] com.mackeeper.MacKeeper.Helper.plist (2016-02-22) [Support]
You still have MacKeeper installed. That's a big NO NO. Uninstall it according to the developer's instructions. You can do a Google search for them.
It seems I successfully deleted MacKeeper. I followed easy directions that I googled. Thank you!!
I still have something called Mac Clean Plus. Should I get rid of this, too?
Yes. Cleaning programs do little good and often can destroy the OS operation.
To second what Eric said, yes get rid on Mac Clean Plus. it is both worthless and dangerous.
Thank you for your help, OT! It seems that all the cleaning programs have been deleted from my computer now. None of them have popped up today. I appreciate your time in fixing this problem.
Susan
