Q: Spinning wheel of death - should I assume my HD is toast?

3.5-year old MacBook suddenly spinning beachball all the time. Performance was perfect until recently, when Chrome began crashing regularly. Is this the HD?  It seems like it is but what is eating all the virtual memory?

I've already repaired what I could in Disk Utility and ordered a new hard drive (1TB). I plan to clone this one if necessary -  is there anything else to do at this point?

There is no evidence of Hardware problems.

The main issue seems to be that you have filled your Mac with junk and have not been careful about where you get stuff from.

By the way I did Repair Disk Permissions - after about four hours and repairing a couple dozen it said "Error: Permission verify or repair failed."

Should I get a utility like Disk Doctor?

See the following technote. Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks - Apple Support

Maybe you can use Disk Utility to check you hard drive.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES â–¹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View â–¹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

    2/26/16 8:33:47.000 PM kernel[0]: disk1: I/O error.

That disk has Bad Blocks. They could be temporary (come clean with a re-write) or permanent (the drive can apply a spare) and there may be only a few or so many the drive is History. Check SMART Status in Disk Utility -- Its info is usually false negatives (the drive has caught fire but smart says it is verified). If it says the drive is BAD, it always is BAD.

You need to replace or 'erase and Install' the stuff on that disk.

It is far simpler to just replace it, then deal with whether it can be erased and re-written to LATER.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.

Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

I did the Verify Disk yesterday and it said it was fine. However, it is obviously not. But, out of curiosity, you said before there didn't appear to be anything wrong except for all the garbage I'd filled my computer with. Is there any evidence the system is compromised or needs to be cleaned in some way, or do you just tell this to everyone who uses torrent?

My key files are already backed up fortunately. I don't want to wait for a Genius Bar appointment and repair time (nearest one is 45 minutes away anyway) so hopefully I should be able to clone the drive myself - hopefully it will last. I have no idea where the original install discs are. I already ordered the new drive and what I'll need from Amazon and should be here by Sunday.

Should I bother with any other diagnostics or is it just eating the harddrive at this point? Should I turn it off or leave it on?

    Thanks for all your help.

Just to be clear, I didn't say that the drive was failing, and I don't know that it is. I said the drive was failing or there was some other hardware fault. Log messages are not a substitute for professional hardware testing, and I wouldn't spend money on a replacement drive unless I knew the drive needed to be replaced.

It was only $80 so regardless I'll end up using it, even if just as a better backup.

I should be able to clone the drive myself - hopefully it will last.

Your drive is producing I/O Errors. These are blocks that cannot be read even after 1000 re-tries.

It is extremely unlikely you will be able to clone that drive. Even if you could, you should not depend on a copy of its data being correct -- you KNOW it is wrong, DON'T copy it!

This is the situation you made your Trusted Backup for!

Over 350,000 of the files on a bootable drive are parts of Mac OS X. Mac OS X does not modify itself. So a new Install on a different drive provides a PERFECT copy of Mac OS X, and you can walk away from your old copy.

Almost all customizations and settings for Mac OS X are made in your User directory, except for obvious system-wide settings that are re-created when needed, such as Screen Resolution and Boot Volume.

I did the Verify Disk yesterday and it said it was fine.

If I were naming those functions, that one would be called "Verify Directory". While it does check that Directory Integrity is self-consistent, it does not read ANY blocks outside the Directory Area of the drive. Completion does NOT mean "the drive is OK".

If I were designing the message shown on completion, that operation would show the message "No problems were detected in the Drive Directory", and nothing more.
