Q: Spinning wheel of death - should I assume my HD is toast?

3.5-year old MacBook suddenly spinning beachball all the time. Performance was perfect until recently, when Chrome began crashing regularly. Is this the HD?  It seems like it is but what is eating all the virtual memory?

I've already repaired what I could in Disk Utility and ordered a new hard drive (1TB). I plan to clone this one if necessary -  is there anything else to do at this point?

My important files are backed up, not the entire system. As I said before, I have no idea where the installation CD is, which is why I hoped I could just clone the drive. Unfortunately the hard drive is too messed up to simply clone - I got the new drive and Carbon Copy Cloner is telling me "OSX is reporting read/write errors with Macintosh HD."  It's telling me "recovery_hd_already_present_Yosemite" so now to figure out if I can somehow boot off that onto the new drive.

I have no idea where the original install discs are

Your report says you are running 10.10.5. The "master discs" are available through Recovery Mode.

    • To re-install the same system, use Command-R at startup to invoke Recovery from the current Boot Drive and install onto the new drive in an external enclosure.

    • To re-install the "shipped in the box" software for a Mac from after 2011, Internet Recovery is in the Mac's Firmware. Use Option-Command-R to invoke Internet Recovery, which can provide Disk Utility and re-download the original software. Once that is working, you will have a working MacOS X, and can use the Mac App Store to download and Install the version you were running.

Ah Perfect! That's what I'm doing. 2 hours, 45 min to install Yosemite on the new drive. Too easy. Hopefully no problems exchanging the drives. I have the screwdrivers I need but have never opened up a Mac before. Wish me luck. Thanks for all your help.
