Never thought I'd ask this: Troubleshooting the Garage Door Openers to work on the Wi-Fi Network.

Just got two new garage door openers that will connect to my Wi-Fi network. Once everything is connected, I can use my i-Phone to open/close the garage doors from miles away. This is helpful because if my wife's 90-year old aunt opens the garage door and wonders into the neighborhood in her underwear, and my wife and I are away at work, errands, etc., I will receive a notice that our garage door(s) has opened. At which point I can call a neighbor and have them steer Aunt Frieda back into the house (or call the police about a possible intruder).

OK here's the issue. I can't get the bloomin' things to work!

I have an AirPort Time Capsule (Base Station 1) that is connected to an AirPort Extreme (Base Station 2). That 2nd base station is in bridge mode.

Part of the problem may be if certain ports are open for inbound/outbound traffic.

The garage door manufacturer states in an article entitled "Why won't the Wi-Fi Garage Door Opener or MyQ Garage (Wi-Fi Hub) connect to my wireless network (home router)?" the following information:

Verify your router has TCP/UDP port 53 open (DNS), inbound and outbound UDP port 80 open, inbound and outbound TCP port 2165 open, and inbound and outbound UDP/TCP port 8883 open.

Using Open Port Check Tool, I was unable to see if any of the above ports were open due to the error message: No route to host.

So, I need some help in determining which Airport Base station I should use for the garage door openers (perhaps it's an automatic selection?). Both garage door openers receive a strong wireless signal from either Airport Base Station.

Then I need to find out how to check if the aforementioned ports are indeed open. If not, I need instructions on how to make them open.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have!

PS> Mods, please move this elsewhere if there's a better spot to post it.

Most port checking tools are not a lot of use.. so don't pay too much attention to that. Particularly on the Apple routers they seem to rarely work.

I searched around for details of this kind of setup and it does seem a little complicated.

Is this working in the home.. if you have your phone connected to wifi in the home.. NOT your phone provider.. can you get the door to operate??

I don't understand where your problem is..

If the door doesn't remote control in the home or if it is just the connection to the phone when you are trying to connect remotely over your normal phone network??

There is some useful set of pictures on how to setup in the home.

But it is not specific to apple router.. only the iphone as a control device.

There is a whole bunch of instructions at the bottom including how to do manual wireless setups.. always the best way when all the stupid auto junk fails.

Opening ports in the airport routers is dependent on which one is the main router.

It is best to use the wireless router that is main router for the network.. all port forwarding must happen on this router.

Apple routers do not support UPNP which is used universally except by apple.

So you might have to manually setup port mapping. I am not sure how this system works.. and you might need to get more info from the manufacturer. Most of these systems use an outside server.. MyQ to which you must be registered from both the wireless hub on the door and the phone.. it then uses an in-between server system. This is easier than direct remote access.

Thanks for your time LaPastenague!

I've got one garage door opener installed. It works great! Wireless devices (including my i-Phone) are functioning superbly as well.

The problem is connecting the Door Opener to the wireless network. I've ran across some of the links you've provided. As you say, this process is a bit more complicated to set up. I did download the MyQ app and established a MyQ account with Chamberlain. The setup instructions on this particular model garage door opener does not include a bluetooth setup procedure. Rather, you push a "learn" button on the garage door and then connect to the MyQ network on the i-Phone. That worked fine. The next step was useless. It wanted me to login to a setup MyQ device website using my i-Phone. However, because I was no longer on the home Wi-Fi network, my i-Phone browser(s) didn't work. They really didn't think that step through (or I'm overlooking the obvious missing link). I suppose if I could tweak the MyQ network so that I could have Internet access, than I could complete the process -- but I haven't figured out how to do that.

I'm thinking that your advice to use the main router (access to the DHCP and NAT router mode) so that a manual setup can be done makes the most sense and may be the only way to accomplish getting this process to work. I may try calling the manufacturer and see if they could help me. Their help desk email process simply said make sure there is a green light on the hub and reboot -- that should work. Yeah....

Clarification Question: You said "Apple routers do not support UPNP which is used universally except by apple." By that do you mean that UDP = UPNP? Just curious.

Thanks again!

Chris
