Q: yosemite 10.10.5 printer not working

After the upgrade to 10.10.5, my imac and my mac air both are having trouble communicating with my printer.  I also tried plugging the printer in via USB and still it doesn't work.   IF i turn the printer off and back on again, occasionally it will suddenly print the last job.

Here's exactly what happens when I try to print from either computer:

I get this message:   "Printing - Looking for printer"

Then it says: "Printing - Unable to locate printer"

Then I turn the printer off and back on again and suddenly I get the message "Printing - printer in use" and the page prints.

I can then print more jobs without a problem until the printer goes idle again, after which the problem reoccurs.

IF I wake the printer from idle before trying to print, the problem still persists.   The only thing that seems to work is turning the printer off and back on whenever I have something in the print cue.

The printer is a Canon MG7120

Latest driver is installed, re-installed and re-re-installed.  Also restarted computer after installing.

I did the printer reset thing and all the other stuff that low-level apple support suggests.

macbook air 2011 13"

I don't know if this will help, but I have a HP Laserjet 4050tn printer that gave me similar problems. I tried to add the printer to my Macbook Air by using the IP address after installing Yosemite 10.10.5. I tried reinstalling the print drivers, repairing permissions, etc., etc.,. What finally worked was to use the HP Jet Direct - Socket protocol window to add the printer. I entered the IP address in that window and everything finally worked. The IP needed to be directed to the Jetdirect socket and not just to the IP address of the printer alone.

    Hope this helps.
