Q: Split Screen Not Working

I can't use the split screen function on my MacBook Pro with Retina Screen, 2015.

I have already gone into System Preferences -> Mission Control -> Displays have separate Spaces

Clicking and holding on the green button (with the two outfacing triangles) doesn't allow me to drag, no matter which direction I choose

Make sure your Mac is backed up.

Start your Mac in Recovery Mode (hold the Command + R) keys right after the startup chime and hold them until you get the Dialog window. Choose Reinstall Mac OS X.

Must I? What will be lost even if I back up?

Or can I just carry on without using split screen...

Nothing should be lost if you have a full backup. The backup is just a precaution in case something goes wrong.

But no, you don't have to reinstall and you can carry on without Split View. It's just a convenience.

Actually that is not true. I have a 13" MacBook Air and a 12' MacBook and Split View works on both.

I didn't say that it doesn't work, but it may be limited be the screen size based on the apps being used.

iTunes is a good example, even on my 15" rMBP, there are apps that will not share the display when the display is set to default. Mail and Image Capture are examples.

Changing the resolution up one closer to More Space and those applications can be shared on the same screen.

Moving the resolution down on towards larger text, Safari cannot be shared with iTunes as it can in Default.

    I guess I am missing something…

What happens if you change your resolution towards Larger Text, can you then share iTunes and Safari?

Or with your setting on default resolution can you share iTunes and Mail? In move your resolution towards More Space, can you then share these two apps?

What about Preview and Pages. if you drop your resolution towards Larger Text can you still share these apps?

Common dominator is the minimum width of an app dependant on the resolution.

All of these examples are effected on my 15" rMBP.

Users without retina displays I think are more effected by this limitation as they generally have a lower resolution than the rMB models.

    I went to nap.

My MacBook Air is non-Retina and the display was set to "Default…".

I will check the other resolutions a bit later. (pun intended)
