Q: What if you back up a hard drive that used an earlier version of OS X?

I have a time machine backup from s different computer. It was also using an earlier version of 10X. What can I do? I won't open. I have the correct authenticating password.

Thanks.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Sounds like you want the new computer to inherit the TM backup from an older computer. Read through this link, which describes a variety of methods, depending on your circumstances.

What exactly, are you trying to do with the old backups?

Do you want to transfer files from the old backups to another Mac?  If yes, then you would use Migration Assistant for that process.  It's on your Mac......Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant.

Do you want to start a new backup with the new Mac?

Do you want to try to have backups of the new Mac use the same backup file as the old Mac?
