It sounds like your iPad is intermittently not being seen in iTunes. I would uninstall and then reinstall iTunes, if it were me. Normally I would recommend this article:
If iTunes doesn‘t recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
But since it only happens every once in a while, I would just uninstall it in the order outlined in the following article and then reinstall it with the link within:
Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later
